"Gas and electricity are cheaper in Brussels"!

It may surprise you to learn that international research has revealed that gas and electricity prices in Brussels are cheaper than in many other European capitals.

The research was conducted by Finland's VaasaETT together with Austrian and Hungarian colleagues. They compiled a ranking of 23 European capitals and compared gas and electricity prices also taking account of taxes and levies. They made two different comparisons: one based on price in euros and a second based on the price compared to the cost of living in these capitals.

Under both methods of calculation Brussels prices fall under the European average. If the cost of living is taken into account Brussels is among the cheapest capitals.

The average price of European electricity is 18.10 euros per kilowatt/hour. In Brussels it works out at 17.39 euros per kilowatt/hour. If cost of living is taken into account the European average works out at 20.29 euros, while for Brussels the figure is only 13.04 euros.

The average price of European gas is 7.13 euros per kilowatt/hour. In Brussels it works out at 6.15 euros per kilowatt/hour. If cost of living is taken into account the European average works out at 7.97 euros, while for Brussels the figure is only 5.46 euros.

The research only looked at Brussels. In Flanders natural gas is cheaper, but electricity is more expensive.
