Fashion designers become barons

With Belgium’s National Day celebrations just two days away King Filip of the Belgium has bestowed a number of noble titles on the great and the good. Two internationally-known Belgian fashion designers, Dries Van Noten and Edouard Vermeulen, are among those to have been given the title of Baron. The former Vice-Chancellor of Leuven University Mark Waer has also become a Baron.

Each year the King hands out a number of noble titles to deserving Belgians.

This year 8 people have been given the title of Baron. This include Dries Van Noten and Edouard Vermeulen (from the Natan fashion house).

The former Chair of the Federation of Belgian Industry Michèle Sioen is to become a Baroness. The former Vice-Chancellor of Leuven University can now also call himself “Baron”.

Commander in the Order of the Crown

In addition to noble titles, the King also has bestowed a number of civil titles to Belgians from various areas of public life.

The former Administrator-General of the BRTN (the former name of the VRT) Cas Goossens has been made a Commander in the Order of the Crown.

The journalist Hind Fraihi, the former Director of the Het Paleis theatre Barbara Wyckmans and the author Stefan Hertmans are among the others to have been made Commanders in the Order of the Crown.
