Club victorious in West Flemish derby clash

Four of this weekend’s eight Belgian First Division games were played on Saturday evening. In the 6pm kick-off Club Brugge went some way to putting right their cup disappointment earlier this week by beating fellow high-flyers KV Oostende 2-0. The league-leaders Zulte Waregem could only manage a 1-1 draw at home against Waasland Beveren.

There was a lot more than pride at stake in Saturday evening’s West Flemish derby between Club Brugge and KV Oostende.

Victory for KVO would have put them top (although maybe just for a couple of hours) and a win for Club Brugge would see them move up to second-place in the league and go some way to putting right recent disappointments.

Both teams defended strongly during a first half that ended goalless. The opening goal came from a flash of brilliance from Izquierdo (photo).

After some great dribbling he shot the ball past Ovono to put Club one-up. Club Brugge had chances to widen the score through Vanaken, Limbombe and Van Rhijn.

However, it wasn’t until the 4th minute of injury time that they made it 2-0 through a Jelle Vossen penalty. The result sees Club Brugge move up to second place with 33 points from 17 games. KV Oostende is 3rd with 31 points.

League leaders drop points at home

Zulte Waregem have seen their lead at the top cut to just 1 point after a one-all draw at home against Waasland-Beveren.

Zulte Waregem have taken just 1 point from their past 2 games. The match got off to a furious start and Zulte Waregem took the lead on 4 minutes through Leye. Waasland-Beveren's equaliser came on 36 minutes through Gano.

This remained the score until the final whistle. Zulte Waregem will be disappointed and Waasland-Beveren pleased with what was a well-deserved point. Zulte Waregem remain top with 34 points from 17 games. Waasland-Beveren are 13th with 15 points.

An important 3 points for STVV

Sint-Truiden pulled away from the drop-spot after a 1-0 home win against relegation rivals Excel Mouscron. STVV’s goal came from Fernandes (photo) on 51 minutes.

The result sees Sint-Truiden move up to 14th place in the league with 13 points from 17 games. Excel Mouscron is 15th with 11 points.

Westerlo – AA Gent ends goalless

AA Gent missed out on the chance to go joint 2nd after a goalless draw away at bottom club Westerlo.

Neither team was able to produce much in the way of interesting football on Westerlo’s frozen pitch.

The result sees AA Gent remain 4th (although this could change if Charleroi beat Standard on Sunday evening) with 31 points. Westerlo remain bottom with 11 points.
