Last’s season’s cup winners fall at first hurdle

Last’s season’s Belgian Cup winners, Standard de Liège were one of two first division teams not to make it beyond the final 32 in this seasons competition. The final 32 is the first round in which First Division teams take part. Standard were beaten 2-1 by Geel from the First Amateur League, the third tier of Belgian football. The other First Division scalp was claimed by Second Division Tubize.

The beat the team currently bottom of the First Division Westerlo by one goal to nil.

Other First Division teams that had trouble beating lower league opposition were Excel Mouscron that needed penalties to see off Dessel Sport from 2nd Amateur League and AA Gent that needed an injury time goal to beat Second Division Lierse SK.

The team currently at the top of the First Division Zulte Waregem too only beat Capellen from 2nd Amateur League (4th division) by the narrowest of margins (2-1).
