Flemish Nationalists say burkini ban is not feasible

The leader of the Flemish nationalist party, Bart De Wever, has said his party does not favour a general ban on the full body swimsuit, the burkini. The party now believes that a general ban cannot be introduced for legal reasons. The Flemish nationalists remain opposed to the garment.

Bart De Wever: "Our party unanimously rejects the burkini that we see as a symbol of the inequality between men and women. Even if it is a woman's own choice, we prefer not to see it. We support the ban that exists in most swimming pools."

Earlier N-VA lawmaker Nadia Sminate, the chair of the Flemish Parliament's Radicalisation select committee, supported the idea. Mr De Wever believes a general ban cannot be introduced for legal reasons.
