KV Kortrijk sink champions Club Brugge

In football, KV Kortrijk won the West-Flemish derby against Club Brugge 2-1. The defending champions have missed their start to the new season, with 2 defeats in 4 games. In other action, surprise leaders Zulte Waregem were held to a draw by KV Oostende. On Sunday afternoon, Anderlecht were also held to a draw, by newcomers KAS Eupen in the German-speaking eastern part of Belgium.
Idriss Saadi was the local hero on a windy evening in Kortrijk.

Striker Idriss Saadi had his first place in the starting 11 this season and thanked his coach with 2 goals in the opening 15 minutes: 2-0, a thundering start for KV Kortrijk as Club Brugge were still half asleep.

Bruges were nowhere to be seen. When Hans Vanaken pulled one back for the visitors, this came rather as a surprise on 33 minutes.

The tables turned after the break. FC Bruges piled up the pressure, especially in the final part of the game, but were unlucky not to equalise. A Boli Bolingoli shot hit the bar and Bruges were denied a penalty kick. The result leaves the champions with 6 points from 4 games, after 2 wins and 2 defeats.

Leaders Zulte Waregem lost the maximum of points as they drew 1-all against ambitious KV Oostende. Senegalese striker Mbaye Leye did it again for Zulte Waregem, wiping out an early Ostend goal.

On Friday, Standard did not manage to move past Charleroi in the Walloon derby, triggering frustration among the ardent Standard fans. The future of Standard coach Emilio Ferrera is more than ever uncertain.

On Sunday afternoon, Anderlecht were stunned by newcomers KAS Eupen in the eastern part of Belgium, the German-speaking area close to the German border. Anderlecht had a 1-2 lead, but a deflection of a late Eupen shot hit the post, landing on the head of Anderlecht goalkeeper Davy Roef and hitting the net: 2-2. Anderlecht have 8 points from 4 matches after 2 wins and 2 draws.

Genk and Gent late on Sunday

Other results: Waasland-Beveren - KV Mechelen 2-2 and Excelsior Mouscron - STVV 2-1, the first victory of the season (and the first points) for Mouscron, who move away from last place.

Tonight, KRC Genk travel to Sporting Lokeren, with AA Gent hosting Westerlo, bottom-of-the-table after the Mouscron win. Anderlecht, Genk and Gent played a European qualifier last Thursday.
