Night-time booze sales ban during European Championships
The ban was announced at Monday evening’s meeting of Brussels City Council.
Figures from the Brussels-Capital Elsene local Police Service show that 60% of cases of people being drunk and disorderly occur between 11pm and 7am. Most arrests are in the city centre. Most of those detained by the police for being drunk say that they got drunk after purchasing drink in a night shop.
The Mayor of Brussels Yvan Mayeur (PS) told journalists "We want to help the hospitality industry and bars with pavement terraces while at the same time limiting the nuisance from night shops”.
A similar ban was imposed during World Cup in the summer of 2014. According to the City of Brussels this served to drastically reduce the number of cases of people being drunk and disorderly.
