Anderlecht second after 2-0 win

In what were the final Play-off I games of the 2015-2016 Belgian First Division season, Sporting Anderlecht secured second place and ensured a place in the qualifying round of next season’s Champions League after a 2-0 home win against Zulte Waregem. The Champions Club Brugge draw their game against KV Oostende 2-2. Last season’s Champions AA Gent have finished 3rd after goal draw at home against Racing Genk.

The Buffaloes have secured a place in next season’s Europa League. Racing Genk finished 4th and will take on the winners of Play-off II, Sporting Charleroi for a place in the qualifying round of the 2016-2017 Europa League.

In the last game of Anderlecht’s supporters wanted to show their discontent with their team’s under par performances during the past season. After a minute of play a section of the crowd bombarded the pitch with smoke bombs and fireworks, forcing the referee to abandon the match for 5 minutes to allow the smoke to clear.

Once play resumed it was the Anderlecht unable to capitalise on a host of chances it created against a Zulte Waregem side that looked outclassed. This changed on 31 minutes when Bram Nuytinck shot home from a corner to put Anderlecht 1-0 up.

A much poorer second half saw Zulte Waregem’s Dalgaard sent off on 59 minutes for his second bookable offence. Despite being a man up Anderlecht were unable to capitalise. However, when Denis Praet scored with his third attempt to put Anderlecht two up and job done.

Champions draw in four-goal thriller

Despite having nothing to play for but their honour, KVO Oostende gave this season’s Champion’s a run for their money in the Jan Breydel Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Club Brugge took the lead on 7 minutes.

KVO’s El Ghanassy managed to keep Club’s Izquierdo’s shot at out of goal and the half ended 1-0 to Club Brugge. Club Brugge’s Thomas Meurnier had to leave the field injured on 52 minutes and the Champions suffered a further blow 10 minutes later when Cyriac equalised for KV Oostende.

Club Brugge thought that they were heading for victory when De Bock made it 2-1 five minutes from time. However, it was not to be and Jonckheere made it 2-2.

Goalless draw sees AA Genk 3rd

Despite AA Gent dominating much of the game, the Buffaloes were unable to score at home against Racing Genk. The result sees last season’s Champions qualify for next season’s Europa League. Genk will have to beat Sporting Charleroi in two legs for a place in the qualifying rounds of next season’s Europa League.
