Suspected people-traffickers shot during hot pursuit

The Dunkirk Bruges Brussels motorway had to be closed for a while on the French side of the border following an accident that occurred after Belgian police attempted to intercept a car that was suspected of carrying people-traffickers.

The French daily "La Voix du Nord" reports that Belgian officers fired shots at an Audi with British number plates. The car was travelling at speeds of 200km/h in an attempt to lose Belgian police who were in hot pursuit. Two suspects in the car, believed to be Iraqi people-traffickers, were injured.

The Audi crashed into a vehicle that had been involved in an earlier crash injuring two other people in the car. The four injured were then airlifted to hospital in Lille by helicopter.

The motorway has meanwhile been reopened, but people travelling from Calais and Dunkirk to Belgium are advised to travel via Lille.
