A poor evening for our Europa League teams

Both Belgian teams competing in this season’s Europa League lost their respective group stage games on Thursday evening. Sporting Anderlecht lost their match against the Azerbaijani Champions Qarabag 1-0 in Baku. Later in the evening Club Brugge were beaten 3-1 at home by the Danish side FC Midtylland.

After putting in a good performance two weeks ago in Monanco, Sporting Anderlecht hoped that their long journey to the Azeri capital Baku would not be a fruitless one. Qarabag Agdam’s goal came on 37 minutes through Richard.

Anderlecht tried to get back into the game during the second half. Sporting appeared to have scored on two occasion however the referee said “no” as he didn’t believe that the ball was over the line.

The result remained 1-0 to the Azeris. With 2 of the 6 group stage games played Sporting Anderlecht are bottom of Group J with 1 point. Anderlecht’s next game is at home against the English Tottenham Hotspur.

Another night of European humiliation for Club Brugge

Yet another lackluster performance saw Club Brugge sustain their second Europa League group stage defeat in as many games.

All the goals in Club’s 3-1 home defeat against the Danish champions FC Midtjylland fell in the second half. Sisto opened the scoring for the Danes on 52 minutes with Onuachu making it 2-0 on 68 minutes.

Novak made it 3-0 to the visitors 15 minutes from time. Club Brugge’s only goal of the game came from Meurnier on 80 minutes.

This however was too little, too late and the score remained 3-1 to FC Midtjylland.

The result sees Club Brugge firmly rooted to the bottom of Group D with 0 points from 2 games and a goal difference of -7.
