Reactors out of action until the New Year
The energy production and supply company Electrabel has said that the Doel 3 and Tihange 2 nuclear reactors will remain closed until the New Year. The Doel 3 and Tihange 2 nuclear reactors have been out of action since March last year after tiny cracks were discovered in their nuclear vessels.
Previously Electrabel had said that the two reactors would remain out of action until 1 November. However, it is still not yet clear when a thorough analysis of the safety reports on the Doel 3 and Tihange 2 reactors will be complete.
On the basis of the reports, a decision will be made on if and when the reactors can be brought back into service.
The Federal Nuclear Control Agency (FANC) has told Electrabel that the analysis of the company’s two safety reports is still on-going. In a statement Electrabel said that “FANC has not specified when the analysis of the reports will be complete”.
Despite the two reactors remaining out of action for longer than had first been said, Electrabel says that there is no threat to electricity supply.
