Drones to help fire-fighters tackle blazes

Belgian fire-fighters will soon be using drones to help to deal with fires across the country. Experiments with drones have already met with success.

Dimi Vercammen of the Londerzeel fire department: "I can give you the example of an industrial blaze in Londerzeel in June of this year. We took pictures using a drone and in this way we were able to identify the sources of the flames. As a result we were able to adjust our actions and deploy extra means. It also gave us a better idea of what was happening and allowed us to identify the critical locations. The drone does not provide any help in the extinguishing of the flames itself."

The fire service is also examining whether drones can be of assistance in the event of multiple pile ups on the roads.
