Refugee organisation files complaint against Asylum Secretary

Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen, an organisation that defends the interests of refugees, has filed a complaint with the European Commission against the Belgian Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Theo Francken. The Flemish nationalist politician stands accused of needlessly creating chaos among refugees.

On Wednesday morning the secretary of state announced that the immigration department would register only 250 refugees a day, though many more are arriving outside its offices.

Mr Francken believes it would be irresponsible and unfeasible to increase the number of asylum seekers being registered on one given day.

Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen also gives plans to create a new social status for refugees the thumbs down. The organisation points out that the matter is settled by the Geneva Convention that has been translated into EU law. It calls for impediments to integration to be removed. Refugees should be given language lessons and help in finding a job.

Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen attacks Mr Francken' policies that it says allow chaos to reign in front of the door of the immigration department in Brussels. The complaint to the European Commission is being made because the organisation believes Mr Francken has violated EU law.
