Penalty seals it for the champions

AA Gent took all three points from their first home game of the season against KRC Genk. Friday evening’s game was the first of this weekend’s eight Belgian First Division games. A Sven Kums Penalty just before half time was enough to give AA Gent victory against KRC Genk on Friday evening.

The league champions got off to a strong start. An early corner for the Buffaloes failed to produce the goods. Genk’s Ndidi cleared Depoitre’s shot from the line. KRC Genk had virtually no possession during the first 25 minutes of the game.

Then Cissé made the most of a poor pass by the AA Gent defence to provide Okriashvili with the ammunition to find the back of the net. However, the Georgian’s goal was disallowed for being (very slightly) off-side.

AA Gent was rewarded for a more than reasonable first half when Kabasele brought down Dejaegere inside the box. Kums scored from the resulting penalty and the half ended 1-0 in the Buffaloes’ favour.

The second half saw a much improved Genk side. However, the Limburgers failed to produce much in the way of chances for much of the half. AA Gent too lacked chances in front of goal. Igor De Camargo came close bring KRC Genk level in the closing stages of the game.

However, his free kick slimmed over the bar and the match ended 1-0 to AA Gent. AA Genk has 4 points from 2 games. KRC Genk has 3 points.
