1,500 well-wishers turned up to greet the royals and admire Queen Mathilde's outfit that included a large hat in mint green.

The king and queen were joined by members of the Belgian government and European Commission president Juncker as Archbishop Leonard celebrated his last Te Deum. Everybody entering the cathedral had to show their invite that for the first time included a QR code that had to be scanned. The police say that this new security measure forms part of the modernisation of the organisation of the Te Deum.

Police arrested one of the well-wishers standing outside the cathedral as they thought he was on the wanted list, but they soon had to admit they had made an error.
