10 per cent of Belgian pensioners moving abroad

1 in 10 pensioners are leaving Belgium for good once they have retired. This is according to research carried out by the National Pensions Office. The number of OAPS opting for a life in a different country is believed to have climbed by 16 per cent in 10 years' time. France is the most popular destination.

Almost 200,000 out of 1.9 million people in retirement are said to have left Belgium forgood. A large majority of 70 per cent also take on the nationality of their new country of residence.

France is the most popular country with 43,420 people enjoying a Belgian retirement benefit. Next come Italy (37,366), Spain (21,740), the Netherlands (20,996) and Germany (11,385).
