Valverde wins Liège-Bastogne-Liège

The Spaniard Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) has won this year’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège cycle race. In what was his second Walloon spring classic race win of the week, Valverde completed the 253-kilometre course in 6 hours, 14 minutes and 20 seconds.

The French rider Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-Quick Step) took second place with another Spaniard, Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), and finishing third. Not a single Belgian rider finished in the top 10.

Gilbert and Kwiatkowski drop out in Saint-Nicolas

The injured Philippe Gilbert and the winner of this year’s Amstel Gold Michał Kwiatkowski race were both forced to drop out before the end of the race. A group of 15 riders took on the final climb to the finishing post in the Liège suburb of Ans.

Dani Moreno attempted a final push forward, but it was Valverde that came out on top peddling on to the third Liège-Bastogne-Liège win of his career.

As in Wednesday's Flèche Wallonne, the young French rider came in second after Valverde, with Joaquim Rodriguez ended the race in third place.
