Belgian cyclist and American team prove golden combination

Belgian cyclist Ben Hermans can put the 55th edition of the Brabant Arrow competition onto his palmares. The 28-year-old Limburgian rides with BMC, an American-Swiss racing team.

Ben Hermans took gold in the 205-kilometre race from Leuven to Overijse, with a several-second lead on Australian Michael Matthews (Orica GreenEdge), and 2011 & 2014 winner Philippe Gilbert, who is also with BMC. Frenchman Tony Gallopin ended in fourth place, Italian Davide Rebellin came in fifth. Belgian Dries Devenyns only just made the top-10.

In a thrilling finale, Hermans admirably stood his ground after a solo. In the last 30 kilometres, he had made an escape from the peloton along with Australian David Tanner.

Only at the very end, Hermans was able to shake Tanner. The small group of favourites for the title came very close to catching up with the Belgian cyclist, but he didn’t crack and came out winning his finest victory of the season.
