12-year-old Flemish boy wins European maths prize
A 12-year-old-boy from Sint-Katelijne-Waver in Antwerp province has won a European maths prize for children in the 5th and 6th year of primary school. Maarten Versteven beat 400,000 children from 16 European countries to take first prize in the mathematics quiz.

Maarten Versteven goes to school at the Octopus Primary School in Sint-Katelijne-Waver. He entered the the preliminary round of the quizz without high expections and suprised himself by coming first in the final.
The 12-year-old told journalists that "I practised once a week, so not reallythat much. I like reckoning up with figures and sums. The most boring thing about maths is the calculator. I’m not so good at typing on the calculator”.
