Bauwens mounts successful title defence

The Flemish boxer Junior Bauwens has successfully defended his European Boxing Union lightweight title. At a match in the football club AA Gent’s Ghelamco Arena Junior Bauwens beat the French boxer Yoann Portallier. A 2,500-strong crowd were there to cheer the Ghent boxer on to victory.

All the money raised from ticket sales will go towards buying a new, larger house for Junior Bauwens' family.

Portallier was a good match for Bauwens and the fight was quite evenly balanced. However, Junior Bauwens hit hard during the closing stages and this was enough for the judges to award him victory on points.

It was Junior Bauwens' 36th victory in 38 fights. He retains the EBU title that he won from the Hungarian Mizei in June of last year.

Earlier in the evening Delfine Persoon had won her fight (not a title fight) against the Kenyan boxer Florence Muthoni on a technical knock-out.
