Wins for Genk, Charleroi, Westerlo and KV Mechelen

Four of this weekend’s First Division matches were played on Saturday. In the 6pm kick-off Sporting Charleroi enjoyed a 1-0 home win against Sporting Lokeren. Meanwhile, Racing Genk’s 2-0 win away at bottom club Lierse SK means that they are now level on points with the Zebras. With just two games to go the battle for a Play-off I place between Genk and Charleroi promises to be an exciting one.

Elsewhere, KV Mechelen move up the table after a 3-2 win away at Zulte Waregem and Westerlo made light work of beating KV Oostende 3-0.

Charleroi very much in the running for Play-off I

A 54th minutes goal by Tainmont (photo) was enough to see Sporting Charleroi remain in 6th place in the First Division and make a Play-off I place an ever bigger reality.

The result sees a lacklustre Lokeren all but certainly condemned to a place in Play-off II. Charleroi’s margin of victory would have been much greater were it not for some excellent saves by the Sporting Lokeren keeper Davino Verhulst.

Sporting Charleroi is 6th with 46 points from 28 games. Sporting Lokeren is 8th with 41 points.

An important result for KRC Genk

Two goals in what was a poor match were enough to give Racing Genk victory against Lierse. The Limburgers’ goals came from Siebe Schrijvers on 3 minutes and Benji De Ceulaer 6 minutes from time.

The result sees Lierse SK remain bottom with 21 points from 28 games. Racing Genk remains 7th with 46 points. This is the same points tally as Sporting Charleroi. However, the Limburgers have won a match less than the Zebras.

Westerlo gives fans something to cheer about

Westerlo enjoyed a 3-0 victory in their game against KV Oostende on Saturday.

Westerlo’s goals came from Geudens on 26 minutes, a Schouterden (photo) penalty on 35 minutes and Aoulad 8 minutes from time. The result means that like KV Oostende, Westerlo is now 100% certain of First Division football next season. Westerlo has 33 points from 28 games. KV Oostende has 32 points.

Plenty of goals

The supporters that made their way to Zulte Waregem’s Regenboog Stadium on Saturday were treated to a 5-goal thriller that saw KV Mechelen return home with all three points.

Zulte Waregem got off to a good start with Gimbert goal on 5 minutes. Hanni equalised on 17 minutes, only for Mendy to put Zulte Waregem ahead from a free-kick on the stroke of half time.

The second half brought with it two KV Mechelen goals from De Witte on 60 minutes and Verdier (photo) on 77 minutes to make for a final score of 3-2 in KV Mechelen’s favour.

The result sees KV Mechelen move up to 9th place with 35 points from 28 games. Zulte Waregem is 12th with 31 points.
