Late goal earns Standard victory

A Ricardo Faty goal on 89 minutes was enough to give Standard de Liège victory against Cercle Brugge in what was the first of this weekend’s First Division football games.

Cercle will be disappointed not to have taken a point from their trip to Liège.

Not least because their goal keeper Olivier Werner (top photo) put on a great performance denying the likes of De Camargo, Bia and Ezekiel on numerous occasions. At the other end Cercle’s best chance of the game came from D’Haene.

However, the West Flemings’ pocket sized striker was too hesitant and the Standard defence was able to clear.

Just as Cercle were starting to believe that they might take a valuable point from the game to help them assure themselves of a place in Play-off II, Ricardo Faty put Andrade’s cross past Werner to make for a final score of 1-0 to Standard.

The result sees Standard move up to third place in the league with 50 points from 28 games. Cercle Brugge remain 14th with 24 points. Both Cercle’s and Standard’s league positions could change depending on this weekend’s other results.
