More foreigners doing research at Flemish universities

Figures from three of Flanders leading universities show that more and more foreign scientists are doing research here. Flemish universities are also actively seeking candidates.

Leuven University vice rector Liliane Schoofs: "Two years ago only 30% of doctorate students hailed from abroad. At most faculties the figure has now reached 40%. In some faculties the ratio of foreigners compared with home-grown scientists is now 50-50."

In 2009-2010 at Antwerp University 29% of doctorates were completed by foreign researchers. Five years on the figure has risen to 35%. In Ghent the figure rose from 25% to 35% between 2009 and 2013.

Many Flemish faculties now actively seek out foreign candidates. Especially in the exact sciences there is a shortage of home-grown talent.
