Outcry saves Cara Pils

Belgian supermarket chain Colruyt has shelved plans to ditch the name Cara Pils for its low budget home brand of pilsner beer.

A spokesman for the company acknowledged the important emotional bond between the lager and its drinkers, an issue that came to the fore on social media after the chain announced plans to replace the name Cara Pils by Everday Pils. Jan Derom insisted that the look of the Cara Pils can was set to change, even though he was aware this would trigger an outcry on social media. The people of Belgium will be given a say in the new look Cara Pils cans, the chain insists.

Last week 6,000 people signed a petition in protest against Colruyt's intention to ditch the name Cara pils.

It remains unclear whether the commotion of the last few days has dented sales of the low budget beer as the supermarket does not reveal commercially-sensitive information.
