"Not enough action against left lane drivers"

Figures from the Belgian Interior Ministry show that only seven motorists are fined each and every day on our roads for hogging the fast lane or as it is called in Belgium "driving on the left"!

The Belgian traffic code insists that drivers must drive on the right as much as possible. Drivers preferring the fast lane when there is no traffic to their right risk having to pay a 55 euro fine.

Belgian motoring association Touring believes that the police are currently shirking their duties: "Hogging the fast lane infuriates other drivers."

Flemish motoring association VAB agrees with Touring. Maarten Matienko: "Our mobility barometer showed hogging the fast lane to be irk number six in our Top 10. 54% of drivers experience it each and every week."

"Other anti-social behaviour that is dangerous and occurs very frequently is tailgating. That's our number 3 irritation. The VAB's message to the police is more attention for anti-social driving including driving on the left and tailgating."

Top vexation is speeding followed by failing to indicate. Irk three is failing to keep a distance. Speeding up when the light turns to amber features on number four followed by failing to stop at pedestrian crossing on five.
