Flemish beef stew reigns supreme

What a surprise! The people of Flanders have chosen beef stew as the ultimate classic Flemish dish. In a poll conducted by TV chef Jeroen Meeus Flemish beef stew came home ahead of chicory with ham and cheese sauce and steak and chips with Béarnaise sauce.

Flemish beef stew is a traditional sweet-sour beef and onion stew made with beer and seasoned with thyme, bay and mustard.

TV chef Jeroen Meeus noted that Flemish stew was a great Flemish dish and his second favourite. He put sausages with red cabbage at the top of his selection.

Vol-au-vent (puff pastry with chicken filling) came home fourth followed by meat balls with sour cherries or in tomato sauce, asparagus 'Flemish style', rabbit with prunes, veal tongue with madeira, Dover sole à la meunière and steak tartar.

Over 14,000 people took part in the poll.
