It was an exceptionally wet January
Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) reports that January 2015 was particularly wet. During last month the RMI measured a total of 123.9 millimetres of precipitation at the Ukkel (Greater Brussels) Weather Centre. This is well above the average of 76.1 millimetres of precipitation in a “normal” January. January 2015 is in the top 10 wettest Januaries since records began.
The VRT’s weatherman Frank Deboosere says that last month was the equal 6th wettest January since records began in 1833. The RMI describes last month’s precipitation as “very abnormal” which means that it is something that on average only happens every ten years.
The wettest January every was in 2004. Then 153.8 mm of precipitation were recorded at the Ukkel Weather Centre.
Not only is the amount of precipitation exceptional, but also the number of days with rainfall. Precipitation on 25 out of 31 days in January. This is well above the January average of 19 wet days.
January was otherwise a normal month as regards weather. The average temperature was 3.5°C, just over 43 hours of sunshine and five days of snow.
