Hazardous conditions on the roads!

There were treacherous conditions on many roads across Belgium on Friday morning following freezing conditions and snowfall last night. The poor conditions triggered a spate of accidents resulting in added congestion and lengthy jams into Brussels, but also Antwerp.

Gritting services have been out and about all night. Some 910 tons of road salt has been slapped on Flemish roads.

Traffic on the outer Brussels orbital ring road, the Ghent-Antwerp and Antwerp-Breda motorways faced disruption following crashes. A smash in the Kennedy Tunnel meant drivers travelling from Antwerp to Ghent faced lengthy delays. The situation was at its worst at 8AM with a total of 200 km of jams on Belgian roads.

In most places it's safe to drive once again, though slippery conditions persist in parts of West Flanders and the Kempen District. Snow and freezing temperatures are making the roads hazardous. There is also a risk over aquaplaning.
