Youngster survives spectacular crash

These are some of the remains of a car a young driver was travelling in when he lost control of the wheel in the seaside resort of Westende early on Saturday morning. As if by a miracle the 22-year-old motorist survived the crash.

The young man from Middelkerke was travelling to Nieuwpoort around 5:30 this morning when he lost control of the wheel of his sports motor. His car ended up 300 metres further along and came to a standstill when it hit a post belonging to the tramways.

The impact was so great that the rear part of the vehicle was ripped away. A tram driver who was making his first journey of the day noticed the incident and alerted the emergency services. The victim was taken to hospital but is not in a life-threatening condition.

Both carriageways of the coastal road were littered with debris and the road was closed to all traffic for a while. A traffic expert blames the accident on excessive speed and a lack of attention.
