Stoned tram driver sacked

A Brussels tram driver has been sacked after he was involved in a road traffic accident in which a cyclist was killed on the Generaal Jacqueslaan in the municipality of Elsene. After the accident the tram driver was found to be under the influence of cannabis.

The driver’s employer, the Brussels public transport company MIVB, sacked the tram driver on the spot. Despite him having tested positive for cannabis, the Brussels Judicial Authorities say that they are not planning to prosecute the tram driver.

The MIVB’s Spokeswoman Ann Van Hamme told journalists that "The circumstances are not entirely clear, but our driver was definitely under the influence of cannabis. This is unacceptable to the MIVB and this is where the man was sacked on the spot.”

Despite having tested positive, the Brussels Judicial Authorities say that the man won’t be prosecuted as CCTV images show that accident could not have been avoided.
