Malinwa victorious thanks to Veselinović goal

KV Mechelen took all three points from their trip to Lierse SK in what was the first match of the weekend in the Belgian First Division. A first half goal from the Serbian striker Dalibor Veselinović was enough to seal it for Malinwa.

Just 15km separates Mechelen and Lier and matches between KV Mechelen and Lierse SK always have something of a derby atmosphere to them.

Lierse tried to turn up the heat early on, but was unable to create much in the way of chances. It was KV Mechelen that scored the only goal of the game on 35 minutes. A precision pass from Mats Rits provided Dalibor Veselinović with all the ammunition he needed to put the visitors ahead.

KV Mechelen came close to going two up when Cordaro lob hit the crossbar. At the other end, Lierse’s Swinkels had a half-chance to put the home side level from a corner.

The early part of the second half was all but devoid of real chances. Veselinović continued to put pressure on the Lierse defence, but got no further than a shot into the side netting.

Despite Lierse pushing forward and creating chances towards the end of the game, the score remained unchanged and the match ended 1-0 to KV Mechelen. The result sees KV Mechelen move up to 5th place with 17 points from 12 games. Lierse SK is 13 with 12 points.
