Belgian fighter jets explore Iraqi airspace

For the first time in history, Belgian F-16 fighter jets have been active in Iraqi airspace. Yesterday, there were several reconnaissance flights near Bagdad. No airstrikes have yet been carried out.

Last week, six F-16 fighter jets flew from the military airbase in Florennes to Jordan. They are part of the international coalition led by the United States combatting the group called Islamic State in Iraq.

Yesterday, two fighter jets flew through Iraqi airspace near the capital Baghdad. After their reconnaissance flight, they returned to their base in Jordan. No airstrikes were carried out during the flights. The video material they recorded is now being analysed.

The main objective of the F-16 mission is to collect tactical information, to ensure of air support and to neutralise ground targets. The operation is called ‘Operation Desert Falcon’.
