Bruges to organise contemporary art triennial

For the first time in 40 years, the city of Bruges is planning a new contemporary art and architecture triennial. Non-profit organisation Brugge Plus, entrusted with the organisation of the triennial, has already released the theme and a list of artists for the event in 2015.

In the late sixties, the Bruges city council and the province of West Flanders organised the first ‘Bruges Triennial’. This event was meant to showcase contemporary artists, with remarkable pieces and entries by then-unknown artists such as Marcel Broodthaers, Panamarenko, Jef Geys en Jacques Charlier. The event was last organised in 1974 and will be resurrected next year.

Brugge Plus has already revealed the theme of the event: “Between Utopia and Dystopia: the city as a solution or a problem?” The organisation also announced a wide range of international artists that will be featured including the Japanese Atelier Bow-Wow, America’s Bruce Odland, Austria’s Sam Auinger and China’s Song Dong.
