Belgium beats Ukraine, stays among world's elite

Belgium have defeated Ukraine in the Davis Cup. The result allows the Belgians to keep their place among the world's tennis elite. It was David Goffin who secured the Belgian victory as he cruised past Sergiy Stakhovsky in straight sets.

Ukraine had to give up their home advantage as the match was moved to Estonia due to the political situation in eastern Ukraine. The clash took place in Tallinn's Tere Tennis Centre on hard court. Both countries were tied 1-all after the first day, but Belgium took the lead by winning yesterday's doubles.

David Goffin (ATP-46) had the chance to wrap it up for Belgium in Sunday's first single match. A win would hand Belgium a 3-1 lead with just one match to go. Goffin started as the favourite against 92nd-ranked Stakhovsky and did not fail, as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 triumph in 1 hour and 44 minutes. Stakhovsky had managed to beat Steve Darcis on Friday, but was left with no chance against in-form Goffin.

The tie was a play-off match for the World Group in the Davis Cup with the world's best 16 countries.
