When canaries prove stronger than buffaloes
AA Gent were ousted from the Cup last Wednesday, losing 1-0 at Ostend. This time, in the league, they were beaten 3-1 by Sint-Truiden in Limburg province.
Sint-Truiden, the only club in the top flight to play on artificial turf, decided the match just after the break with two wonderful goals by youngster Pieter Gerkens. AA Gent tried a comeback, with defender Stefan Mitrovic pulling one back, but the same Mitrovic was sent off with a second yellow shortly after - the end for the Buffaloes from Ghent, who are no longer stampeding.
The Canaries, as Sint-Truiden are nicknamed, meanwhile are flying as never before, with 3 recent wins lifting them out of the relegation zone. AA Gent are in danger of losing their top-6 spot which grants teams a place in the all-deciding season-ending play-offs.
Ostend escape in the final part of the game
In other action, leaders Zulte Waregem were held to a 1-all draw at KV Oostende (picture below). Zulte Waregem climbed ahead in the first half, but a penalty goal by veteran Ostend playmaker Franck Berrier wiped out the lead.
Zulte Waregem had reason to complain after the break, when a valid goal by Timothy Derijck was not allowed because the referee saw a foul on Ostend goalkeeper Didier Ovono, who let the ball slip from his hands.
Chance for Club Brugge
In other action, Lokeren won 1-3 at Westerlo, Charleroi beat Mouscron 2-0 and KV Mechelen got the better of Waasland-Beveren 2-0.
If Club Brugge beat Kortrijk at home this afternoon, they take over the top spot from Zulte Waregem. Brugge only have the league to concentrate on after being eliminated in Europe and the Belgian Cup.
