Second half goals steer AA Gent to victory against league leaders

AA Gent move up to 4th place in the Belgian First Division after a 3-0 home win against the league-leaders Zulte Waregem. Zulte Waregem got off to a furious start. Both teams fought for the ball which lead to a series of fouls.

There was little in the way of attractive football during early in the first half. AA Gent looked dangerous whenever it was able to break through. There were chances for Neto, Simon. However, a strong Steppe was on hand in the Zulte Waregem goal. At the other end, the Gent keeper Rinne was hardly tested.

It was a different story in the second half. AA Gent turned things up a gear and was soon 1-0 up thanks to a Couilibaly goal on 48 minutes.

Although Saief missed from the penalty spot for AA Gent the Buffaloes scored 2 more second half goals through Simon and Van der Bruggen on 78 and 82 minutes respectively.

A Hamalainen shot that hit the post was Zulte Waregem’s best chance of the half. The result sees AA Gent 4th with 18 points from 10 games. Zulte Waregem is still top with 20 points.

However, this could chance if Sporting Anderlecht beats Sporting Lokeren on Sunday evening.
