Late goal floors injury-hit champions

In the first of this weekend’s matches in the Belgian First Division, the league champions Club Brugge lost their away game at Sporting Charleroi. A goal by Charleroi’s Bedia on 90 minutes was enough to give the Zebas a 1-0 victory.

Club Brugge was missing no fewer than 10 players due to illness or injury. Nevertheless Club Brugge were strong early on and there were chances for Vossen and Denswil. Club can feel aggrieved that N’Ganga’s pulling of Vossen inside the box was not adjudged to have been a foul by referee Joeri van de Velde.

A Vanaken header also failed to find the back of the net and the half ended goalless.

The second half saw both teams defend strongly with few chances at either end. A the start of the final 15 minutes Sporting Charleroi’s Diandy’s 30 metre shot was saved by the Club Brugge keeper Butelle.

5 minutes later Butelle was on hand again to deny Tainmont. However, he was no match Bedia’s 90th minute header and the match ended 1-0 in Sporting Charleroi’s favour.

The result sees Charleroi move up to second place (although this will probably change depending of the weekend’s other result) with 19 points from 10 games. Club Brugge is fourth (for the time being) with 16 points.
