Tom Boonen forced to quit Eneco Tour after fall

The Flemish cyclist Tom Boonen has been force to withdraw from the Eneco Tour, the tour of Belgium and the Netherlands, after suffering a fall in the race’s fourth stage. 35-year-old Boonen complained of wrist pain after the fall. It is still unclear how serious his injury is. Tom Boonen is currently preparing for the Cycling World Cup in Qatar.

Tom Boonen fell during the fourth stage of the race between Aalter (East Flanders) and Sint-Pieters-Leeuw (Flemish Brabant). He got back on his bike and carried on. However, a little later he called it a day.

The cyclist from Balen (Antwerp province) complained of wrist pain and was taken to hospital fora n examination. Earlier indications suggest that the injury is not too serious.

A serious injury would be a severe blow for the Belgian team coach Kevin De Weert as Tom Boonen is Belgium’s biggest hope for the forthcoming World Cycling Championships in Qatar.

With his victories in the Ride London Classic and the Brussels Cycling Classic Tom Boonen proves that he can still cut the mustard.
