Greg Van Avermaet retains coveted Yellow Jersey

Belgium's Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) kept his yellow leader's jersey in the world's biggest cycling event, the 3-week stage race Tour de France. Van Avermaet didn't encounter any major problems in a relatively flat stage between Arpajon-sur-Cère and Montauban, where Britain's Mark Cavendish claimed yet another stage win, his third in 6 stages.

The 6th stage ended in a bunch sprint. While Germany's Marcel Kittel was reaching to victory, it was Cavendish who proved to be the fastest man in the final hundred metres.

Van Avermaet claimed the jersey in the Massif Central yesterday and clearly enjoyed today's massive press attention. Van Avermaet was comfortable in the peloton the whole day, surrounded by his BMC team mates (photo below), on a quiet day where the riders took a break due to the heat.

He hopes to survive tomorrow's 7th stage featuring the Col d'Aspin in the end, as the Tour peloton enters the Pyrenees. Van Avermaet is not a specialist of the mountains, but can limit the damage with the form he is enjoying now.

Another Belgian, Thomas De Gendt, kept the Polkadot Jersey as king of the mountains (photo below: Belgians rule in the Tour de France: East-Flemings De Gendt and Van Avermaet).
