Club Brugge victorious in “Battle of Flanders”

It was a good evening for Club Bruges on Saturday. Two second half goals were enough to see the West Flemings beat AA Gent and move a step closer to the league champion’s title. In Play-off II there was a win for KV Mechelen, while Sporting Charleroi and Sint-Truiden and Mouscron-Péruwelz and Waasland-Beveren shared the points in their respective games.

An at times bed tempered match with plenty in the way of fouls saw both Club Brugge and AA Gent devote most of their energy to intimidating the match referee and each other rather than producing much in the way of attractive football.

A sloppy AA Gent had goalkeeper Mats Sels to thank that the half ended goalless. It was more of the same in the second half. Pressure from Club Brugge and excellent work from Sels keeping the home side at bay.

However, that all changed 10 minutes from time when the unfortunate Mitrovic scored an own goal, putting Club Brugge 1-0 up. Sven Kums had a golden opportunity to bring AA Gent level a couple of minutes later.

However, his penalty kick was saved by the Club keeper Brutelle. An Izuierdo goal in the third minute of injury time made for a final score of 2-0 in Club Brugge’s favour. Club Brugge now have a 7 point lead at the top of Play-off I. Club have 38 points. Second-placed AA Gent have 31 points.

Sporting Anderlecht could leap-frog over them if they either win or draw on Sunday evening against Zulte Waregem.

KV Mechelen make it 6 out of 6

KV Mechelen enjoyed the second victory of their Play-off II campaign with a 2-1 home win against Sporting Lokeren. KV Mechelen’s goals came early in the first half on 4 and 12 minutes respectively.

Sporting Lokeren’s second half goal came on 63 minutes through Enoh. Spoting Lokeren’s Maric was send off in the 3rd minute of injury time for his second bookable offence of the game.

KV Mechelen top Play-off II Group B with 6 points from 2 games. Sporting Lokeren is second with 3 points. In Saturday evening’s other Group B game Sporting Charleroi and Sint-Truiden drew one-all.

Baby scored for Charleroi on 47 minutes only to put the ball into his own net 20 minutes later. Both Charleroi and Sint-Truiden have 1 point from 2 games.

Mouscron-Péruwelz v Waasland Beveren ends goalless

With the exception of the red card for Waasland-Beveren’s Vanzo, little of any interest happened in this below par match. Mouscron-Péruwelz have 2 points from 2 games Waasland-Beveren has 1 point.
