Club Brugge go top after win against AA Gent

Club Brugge have gone top of the Belgian First Division after beating AA Gent for the second time in a week. KV Oostende won their first match of the year and a much-improved Sporting Anderlecht remain 3rd after a 2-2 draw against KV Mechelen.

The weekend’s action got under way on Friday evening with KV Mechelen – RAC Anderlecht. KV Mechelen took the lead on 11 minutes through Mats Rits.

However Anderlecht equalized through Acheampong on 18 minutes. It was Acheampong that put Anderlecht ahead on 70 minutes only for Verdier to equalize on 73 minutes for KV Mechelen.

The result sees Anderlecht remain 3rd with 48 points from 25 games. KV Mechelen is 12th with 27 points.

Saturday evening’s results

Zulte Waregem’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of Charleroi and Racing Genk’s 1-0 win away at Mouscron-Péruwelz sees Zulte Waregem drop to 6th and Genk move up to 5th in the table.

Sporting Charleroi a 7th, Mouscron-Péruwelz are 15th.

The match between Waasland-Beveren and OHL ended in a 2-2 draw. OH Leuven is 14th and Waasland-Beveren 13th. KV Kortrijk drew their match against bottom club Westerlo 1-1. Kortrijk is now 10 in the league table.

Wins for Club Brugge, Sint-Truiden and KV Oostende

Club Brugge enjoyed their second “Battle of Flanders” victory of the week with a 1-0 home in against AA Gent. The only goal of the match came from a Refaelov penalty on 59 minutes.

The result means that it is all change at the top with Club Brugge now topping the league with 52 points from 25 games. Although this is the same points tally as AA Gent, Club Brugge are top as they have won more matches than the Buffaloes.

Standard de Liège failed to keep up the pressure for a top 6 place. Despite a strong start that saw Edmilson score the opening goal of the match against his former Club Sint-Truiden, Standard were unable to get the better of the Canaries.

Proschwitz (photo) equalized for the visitors two minutes from half time and made it 2-1 to Sint-Truiden. Try as they did, Standard were unable to salvage anything from the game. The result sees Standard 8th with 34 points. Sint-Truiden is 9th with 29 points.

In final game of the weekend, KV Oostende enjoyed a 1-0 victory away at Sporting Lokeren. KVO’s goal came in the 83rd minute through Jali.

The result, KVO’s first of 2016, sees them consolidate their position as fourth in the league. KV Oostende have 43 points from 25 matches. Sporting Lokeren are 11th and have 28 points.
