Belgium world's strongest footie nation

Belgium has taken the top sport in the FIFA rankings. In the league table compiled by the world soccer association Belgium will take a clear lead in November. The Belgians are ranked ahead of Germany and Argentina.

Following its recent success in European Cup qualifiers Belgium now has 1,440 points. At the weekend Belgium beat Andorra to qualify for next year's European Cup in Paris for the first time in 32 years. On Tuesday night the Belgians saw off Israel 3-1 at home.

In the qualification for the World Cup Belgium now lead group B ahead of Wales, Bosnia Herzegovina, Israel, Cyprus and Andorra.

In the FIFA rankings Argentina that led the pack this month drop back to third place in November following their sultry performance in qualifiers for the World Cup.

The FIFA rankings take account of a team's performance during the past four years, but the most recent matches count more. The ranking also considers the weight of the opponent and the importance of the match.
