First Division teams through to next round

In the first of this week’s 16 Belgian Cup ties First Division teams were able to see off lower-league opposition. Two early goals from Buyl on 3 minutes and Kaya on 9 minutes were enough for First Division Zulte Waregem to see off Second Division Union Saint-Gilliose.

Zulte Waregem came close to extending their lead before half time. However, it was not to be and an uneventful second half failed to produce any goals making for a final score of 2-0 to Zulte Waregem.

A lucky escape for Westerlo

In Tuesday evening’s other match, First Division Westerlo had a lucky escape against Cercle Brugge.

The just 700 supporters in Westerlo’s Kuipke Stadium were treated to no fewer than five goals. Westerlo opened the scoring on 7 minutes though Visakovs.

The first ended 1-0 in Westerlo’s favour. Cercle equalised 6 minutes into the second half through Maertens and went ahead when Yagan scored from the penalty spot on 61 minutes.

For the next 25 minutes it looked as though Westerlo were to become the first First Division casualty of the season.

However, Hyland’s goal on 85 minutes and Visnakov’s second goal of the evening in the final minute of normal time were enough to ensure that it is Westerlo rather than Cercle that progresses to the next round.
