FC Bruges downed; Anderlecht survive (but only just)

Club Brugge, who returned from Manchester United this week with a 3-1 defeat, have not been able to wipe out their European hangover in the domestic competition. Bruges lost 2-0 at local rivals Zulte Waregem, while title rivals Anderlecht squeezed past Sporting Lokeren in extra time. Belgium is already seeing the 5th day of play this weekend.

Club Brugge played a disappointing first half in Waregem. Central defender Brandon Mechelen caused a penalty and Zulte Waregem Captain Mbaye Leye, the Senegalese striker, didn't hesitate: 1-0.

The Bruges play improved a bit after the break, but Bruges missed their chances. The home team were much more efficient, as Bryan Verboom made it 2-0 late in the match. Bruges coach Michel Preud'homme had chosen youngster Jean-Charles Casteletto to replace veteran midfielder Timmy Simons. He may also replace Simons next Wednesday when Bruges receive Manchester United for the return leg in the Champions League play-offs.

The defeat is another disappointment for Bruges, as Zulte Waregem hadn't impressed at all so far, winning just 1 of their first 4 matches.

From hell to heaven in extra time

Anderlecht, the number 3 of the past season after winning back-to-back titles, are hoping to regain their status this season but have not been able to really convince so far. They were in for a difficult afternoon against Sporting Lokeren, but it was Golden Shoe winner Dennis Praet who made the winning goal in added time, 1-0.

The crowd was unhappy with the team performance, but also because of the Anthony Vanden Borre case. The defender has been referred to the B-squad after challenging the coach and technical staff. Part of the crowds were booing this decision.

No first for Mouscron

In other action, KV Mechelen defeated OH Leuven 2-1, their second win of the season. Newcomers OHL remain in the doldrums at the bottom of the table.

Waasland-Beveren held Mouscron-Péruwelz to a 3-all draw. It looked as if Mouscron would take their first victory of the season, but Waasland-Beveren managed to equalised deep into stoppage time. Mouscron remain bottom of the table.

Charleroi and Westerlo were tied 0-0. This afternoon sees 3 more games: Anderlecht receive Lokeren, Standard host surprise leaders Ostend and champions AA Gent travel to Kortrijk in West-Flanders.
