Lianne Tan clinches badminton silver at European Games

Belgium's Lianne Tan has taken the silver in the women's singles badminton event at the European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Limburg resident lost the final in 3 sets as her Danish opponent Line Kjaersfeldt proved too strong: 21-18, 19-21 and 9-21 after 53 minutes of play.

Line Kjaersfeldt, the second seed and the world's number 37, started as the favourite against 21-year-old Tan from Limburg province, the world's number 79.

Things were looking bright for Tan after winning the opening set and as she enjoyed a 12-8 lead in the second. Kjaersfeldt next upped her level and was able to take a tense second set 21-19. Tan lost the momentum and was whipped in the final set, only managing 9 points.

It's Belgium's 11th medal at these European Games, which are coming to a close today, after 4 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals.
