Bruges back to square one

In football, league leaders Club Bruges suffered their third defeat of the season. Bruges were beaten 2-1 by arch rivals AA Gent in the 'Battle of Flanders'. Defending champions Anderlecht made the most of the Bruges error, winning at KRC Genk and reducing the gap with Bruges to just one points. It's back to square one for Bruges in the battle for the league title.

AA Gent took a symbolic victory that could give them a mental boost. The East-Flemings had failed to win a summit match against a top team in their new stadium, the Ghelamco Arena (in which they have been playing since the summer of 2013, red.) so far. While this was due to poor play last season, this was no longer the case this season under the new coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck. AA Gent often had the best chances, but there was always something that went wrong.

This time, things went well for AA Gent against a Bruges side that didn't look 100% fit after their European outing in Denmark, last Thursday. The victory was nevertheless deserved, with the agile Ghent winger Moses Simon being a constant threat for the Bruges defenders.

Anderlecht won the difficult match at KRC Genk, 0-1 after a Steven Defour effort. This allowed Anderlecht to reduce the gap with Bruges to just 1 point. After New Year, Bruges had a comfortable lead of up to 7 points at one stage and looked poised to take their first league title in 10 years. However, now it's back to square one for Bruges. There are 3 days of play to go before the play-offs start. The big (mental) winners of the weekend are Anderlecht and AA Gent.
