KV Mechelen leave Anderlecht with a hangover

In football, Anderlecht failed to move past KV Mechelen (1-1). The defending champions looked set to win the game after an Aleksandar Mitrovic goal, but had to swallow the equaliser in added time. Leaders Club Brugge can extend the gap with second-placed Anderlecht to 6 points on Sunday evening if they beat Sporting Lokeren.

Visitors KV Mechelen opted for defensive tactics in Anderlecht's Astridpark and this proved to be the right approach. 'Malinwa' (as KV Mechelen are dubbed) tried the counter-attack and almost managed to score one before the break.

Anderlecht worked hard, didn't get a penalty they should have been given, and finally climbed ahead through striker Mitrovic. By then Anderlecht had lost two key players, defender Chancel Mbemba and winger Ibrahima Conte, through injury. Anderlecht looked set to take it, but KV Mechelen equalised in added time through striker Dalibor Veselinovic. The Serb scored against his former team and didn't celebrate his goal.

A missed chance for Anderlecht to put some pressure on Club Brugge, who face Sporting Lokeren at 6pm. Charleroi-AA Gent is the final game at 8pm.

Miracle for Lierse?

Meanwhile, things are getting tense at the bottom of the table. Lierse SK surprised by beating relegation rivals Cercle Brugge 2-1 at the Lisp in Lier (Antwerp). Everyone thought Lierse would end the league in last place, but back-to-back victories lifted them to just 2 points from Cercle Brugge and Moeskroen-Peruwelz, who are in last but one position. Only the bottom two teams will have to play a play-off competition against relegation.

Moeskroen were beaten 0-1 by KV Oostende, while Waasland-Beveren, another club in dire straits, managed a stunning 1-0 victory against revelations Kortrijk.
