Wickmayer through to fourth round

The Fleming Yanina Wickmayer has ousted yet another seed at this year’s Australian Open in Melbourne. Wickmayer powered into the fourth round defeating the Italian 14th seed Sara Errani 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Friday at the Hisense Arena.

The world No.80, who has played three three-setters this week at Melbourne Park, saw off for the 23rd seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round.

The world No. 258 Simona Halep, who beat Bethanie Mattek-, is to be Wickmayer’s fourth round opponent. The Romanian beat the American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in two sets 6-4, 7-5 on Friday.

A former US Open semi-finalist, Wickmayer has won all three of their previous meetings - although admittedly they came in 2010-12.
