Bruges derby in Cup semi-final

After a last minute goal saw Club Brugge beat KV Mechelen 3-2 in the first of the quarter finals on Tuesday, the remaining quarter final second leg ties were played on Wednesday evening.

Already three-up from the first round, Sporting Anderlecht enjoyed something of a walk in the park in the second leg of their tie against Zulte Waregem.

Two goals from Kljestan and a goal each from Cyriac and Leya Iseka were enough to give them a 4-2 victory on the night (7-2 on aggregate) against an experimental Zulte Waregem team that contained a host of young players.

Zulte Waregem’s goals came from a Trajkovski penalty on 76 minutes and from the younger brother of Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke, Jonathan on 86 minutes.

Anderlecht’s opponents in the semi-finals will be AA Gent. A goal from Dejaegere (photo) on 63 minutes made for a 1-0 score on the night and 5-1 on aggregate against near neighbours Sporting Lokeren. AA Gent’s Moses Simon was sent off 20 minutes from time.

Twice in a week

For the second time in five days Cercle Brugge have beaten Sporting Charleroi. The West Fleming’s win at the weekend saw them climb out of the relegation for the first time in months.

Wednesday evening’s wins sees them earn a place in the semi-finals of the Belgian Cup against local rivals Club Brugge. Cercle’s goals came from Muzaqi on 68 minutes and Buyl in the 6th minute of injury time.

The Cercle team contained a number of young and reserve players not normally used to first team action. The match ended 2-0 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.
