Devils draw against Wales
Wales started off playing long balls and putting pressure on the Belgian defence. Gareth Bale’s free-kick might have beaten a lesser goalkeeper that Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois.
As the half wore on Bale got less and less support from his teammates. Belgium turned up the heat. Chadli had a great chance to score from an Origi cross, but it was not to be.
A couple of minutes later Lombaerts hit the post. An entertaining first half ended goalless.
The fans in a packed King Boudewijn Stadium and the millions of viewers watching the match at home or in their local bar expected Belgium to finish the job in the second half. However, Belgium was unable to get the better of the Welsh and even had a narrow escape when a Bale effort went just wide.
The National Team Coach Mark Wilmots brought in fresh blood in the shape of Dries Mertens. However, Mertens’ contribution to the match was short-lived as he was stretchered off with concussion after a clash of heads with Wales George Williams (photo).
Mertens was unconscious for several minutes before being taken away by paramedics. Despite continuing to push forward, Belgium was unable to score and the match ended goalless.
